The Muzza's: September 2007

Well the mighty Cats have won the Grand Final and we are very excited. They haven't won a grand final since 1963. So far this year the Cats have managed to collect every sporting achievment in the AFL and VFL, the first was the Rising Star awarded to the best new rookie in the AFL.

Selwood won the medal with 44 votes from Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury (37) and Melbourne’s Nathan Jones (17). Port Adelaide’s Justin Westhoff (10) was fourth.

Their next achievement was the winning the VFL grand final this was a trashing over Coburg by 74 points. The AFL is a league of players that are the reserves the AFL club.

Next we have a comp called the All Australian team, how this works is that a team from all the AFL teams is chosen. The team is made up of all the best players in the league for that year. Geelong FC managed to get 9 players in the team. The AFL has 16 teams competing in the comp. This was the greatest number of players ever from one club. Of the Cats, only Matthew Scarlett had received All-Australian honours before and this is his third selection. The other eight Cats picked were Gary Ablett, Matthew Egan and Darren Milburn, Jimmy Bartel, Steve Johnson,Cameron Mooney, Joel Corey and Cameron Ling.
Next was the Brownlow medal awarded to the Fairest and best player in the AFL. The winner was Jimmy Bartel on 29 Pts.

The Cats did everything _ absolutely everything _ perfectly, relentlessly pounding a shameful Port Adelaide by 119 points, 24.19 (163) to 6.8 (44), eclipsing the previous record grand final margin of 96 points set by Hawthorn in 1988. The Cats went on a run of 10 straight goals, many starting with the run of Matthew Scarlett in defence, to at one stage lead by 128 points.

Steve Johnson has capped off a remarkable come back from early in the season to win the Norm Smith medal as the best player in the Cats 2007 Premiership win.
Johnson ended the game with 18 kicks, 5 handballs, 23 posessions, 9 marks and 4 goals 2 behinds.
Accepting the medal Johnson told the screaming MCG crowd of over 97,000 that this one was for all the Cats fans.
